The Coach House - Isle of Mull
Only
the outside walls of this old granite building could be retained when the
Coach House was converted into a self catering cottage. Now fully insulated
against the elements and centrally heated, the Coach House offers the best
of modern living in a truly traditional building. Situated in the spacious
grounds and gardens of Ardfenaig House, the Coach House looks out onto
a large pond and across Loch Caol to Bunessan village and the mountains
of Glen More. Alongside it runs a burn, and a gate leads onto the open
spaces of the Ross of Mull-hills and heather, sea and sand.
Inside, a
large vestibule opens into the spacious open plan downstairs. A comfortable
living area with SKY television, a DVD player and a large picture window occupies one end
whilst the dining area, kitchen, and shower room occupy the other. Upstairs are two twin
bedrooms with en suite bathrooms and enough room to easily accommodate a
comfortable folding bed. All bed, bath, and table linen are provided.
This is such
an idyllic place for a holiday that you may be reluctant to tour the rest
of Mull and lona.
However, from
the entrance drive to the main road a left turn will take you to Bunessan
with its shops, pub, and restaurant. Beyond the village is the
whole of Mull to explore with numerous walks over moor and mountain, through
fields of wildflowers, and to high cliff's overlooking solitary beaches. Or drive through friendly villages, tour castles, discover standing stones
and stone circles, and walk the colourful main street along the harbour
at Tobermory, the capital of Mull.
Turn right onto the main road and after only five minutes you will arrive in
Fionnphort where the shop provides a varied supply of groceries, gifts,
and books. The village also has a pub and restaurant. From the terminal at Fionnphort there are frequent ferry
sailings to the magical island of lona. Visit the restored Abbey given
life by the ecumenical community that lives and works within it. lona is
filled with beauty from the ruins of a 12th century nunnery to gentle scenery
dotted with small crofts and sandy beaches. Boat trips depart lona for
Staffa and Fingals Cave, home to seals and friendly puffins and farther
away to the Treshnish Islands where seabirds abound.
The Coach House at Ardfenaig invites guests to savour the freshness of the air and the clarity of the light and to enter the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere of a bygone era, far from the noise, busyness, crowds and traffic that characterize modern day life.
